OTDR Reflectometer

A power meter tells you a link is losing too much; an OTDR tells you where. The reflectometer sends a pulse into the fibre and reads the echoes: every splice, every connector and every break appears at its exact distance on the trace.

Answer 2 short questions — we show you the OTDRs that suit your network.

Step 1 Which fibre are you testing?
Step 2 Which form factor? (optional)

What is an OTDR for?

It is the instrument that turns “it does not work” into “the fault is at 1,420 metres”.

Locate a break

The trace collapses at the exact distance of the fault — you know where to dig or which enclosure to reopen before you travel.

Measure every event

Splices, connectors, bends: each one appears with its own loss, instead of a global figure that does not say where the problem comes from.

Accept a new link

The OTDR trace is the proof of conformity of a link at handover, and the reference to compare against in case of dispute.

Document what is there

A trace archived at installation lets you compare later and see what has degraded — or what has been changed.

Why choose our OTDRs?

Single-mode, multimode or both

1310 / 1550 nm for FTTH and carrier work, 850 / 1300 nm for LAN and data centre, or one unit covering all four wavelengths.

From pocket mini to 4-in-1

A mini OTDR fits in a pocket for a quick check; the portable models include a power meter, VFL and light source — one case instead of three.

Range matched to the network

From a local loop of a few kilometres to 60 km links, the optical budget of the unit is chosen from the distance to cover.

In-service testing

Some models measure at 1577 or 1490 nm without interrupting service, so you can work on a live network.

Why a launch cable box?

It is the accessory people forget to buy — and without it the first connector of the link is never measured.

The dead zone at the start

The launch pulse saturates the detector over the first few metres. Everything in there — starting with the OTDR's own connector — is invisible.

Shift the measurement

The launch cable moves that dead zone into a sacrificial cable, so the real link starts in measurable ground.

One box per fibre type

SC/APC single-mode in 500 or 1000 m, LC/UPC OM3 in 300 m for multimode: a single-mode box does not test multimode.

Choosing the length

The box must outrun the dead zone of the unit: the greater the range measured, the longer the box has to be.
